Wisconsin Wetlands Association offers a variety of events throughout
Wisconsin designed to educate and engage the public in wetlands
and wetland science. For complete details about events in your
area, please see our calendar.
Annual Wetland Science Conference This annual event began in 1995
as a daylong roundtable discussion and grew to a two-day conference
that attracts more than 300 wetland scientists, water resource professionals, students, and others. The themes have included wetland-related topics such as coastal wetlands, ephemeral wetlands, wetland restoration,
conservation ethics, prairie wetlands, and riverine wetlands. WWA Annual Meeting
The Wisconsin Wetlands Association
annual meeting is an opportunity for WWA members and the general public to gather to celebrate the successes and new directions of the organization. The Annual Meeting and Field Day is always a great celebration of our more many years of working for Wisconsin's wetlands.
Wetland Workshops
Wisconsin Wetlands Association holds regular educational workshops with classroom and "hands-on" or filed-based components. Past topics include wetland restoration, financial
benefits of wetland restoration, purple loosestrife survey and
bio-control for citizens and teachers, and more.
Organizing to Prevent Wetland Losses Workshops
WWA receives weekly calls and emails from citizens seeking advice on how to stop or reduce the wetland impacts of proposed construction projects. Through our own experience, and the success stories of many local wetland enthusiasts, we know that citizen-led wetland protection efforts can make a difference. WWA has held past series of free workshops, Organizing to Prevent Wetland Losses, to help local organizations and citizens become an informed and effective voice for wetland protection in their own communities.
Wetland Friendly Stormwater Management Workshops
Why should developers care about wetlands in or near their projects? Wetlands can be aesthetic amenities that buyers value AND wetlands can reduce infrastructure costs through their stormwater functions. WWA has held past workshops for builders and others who are involved in planning and/or building new developments who learned how to incorporate wetland sensitive stormwater management practices into new projects and to restore/create wetlands for stormwater management purposes.
Wetlands & Poetry Course
This inspirational wetlands course, led by wetland ecologist Mary Linton and acclaimed poet Todd Davis, involves four days of rustic living, hiking, wetland discovery and poetry writing. Participants explore the flora and fauna of wetlands, discover fine examples of nature poetry, and participate in writing exercises and poetry sharing.
Wetland Plant Identification Course
WWA has worked with nationally renowned, expert botanist Dr. Bob Mohlenbrock three years in a row to offer a week-long field course in wetland plant identification. The workshop is an intensive, hands-on field course in which participants learn the distinguishing characteristics and habitat requirements of every wetland plant encountered.
