Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM) recently announced it will accept applications for the second round of Pre-Disaster Flood Resilience Grants beginning September 15th until December 12th. WEM is requesting potential applicants to send in a notice of intent to apply before October 10th. This helps both the applicant and program administrators identify whether this, or other programs, may be a good fit for a potential project.
WEM also announced two webinars to share information about the competitive grant:
Following its creation in the 2023-25 state budget, the Pre-Disaster Flood Resilience Grant was recently reauthorized in the 2025-27 state budget and funded at $2 million. Under the grant program, local governments impacted by flooding disasters may compete for two different types of grants:
- An Assessment Grant, which is focused on assessing flood vulnerabilities at a watershed, catchment, or stream reach scale; or
- An Implementation Grant, which is focused on projects that restore the landscape’s natural capacity to reduce flooding through wetland, stream, and floodplain restoration.
This program has been a policy priority for the Wisconsin Wetlands Association because it provides a pathway for flood prone communities to understand the root causes of local flooding and reduce those risks through strategically restoring wetlands, streams, and floodplains.
WWA appreciates the bipartisan support of Wisconsin legislators and Governor Tony Evers who supported the creation of this program. WWA also thanks Representative Todd Novak and Senator Romaine Quinn for elevating the importance of this program.
