Guided by the wisdom of his grandfather, a young filmmaker journeys through the mysterious wetland in his grandparents’ backyard. Airing on PBS stations nationwide this April, An Invitation to Wonder invites viewers to explore the hidden beauty and ecological importance of wetlands.

Embark on a journey into Waubesa Wetlands, one of southern Wisconsin’s most diverse marsh ecosystems. Wetland scientist and Nelson Institute faculty emeritus Calvin DeWitt shares the knowledge he has gained from living on the marsh for over 50 years. Taking these lessons, his 20- year-old grandson Ben Albert navigates the challenges of this environment and captures a world rarely seen through sweeping aerials, macro imagery, and underwater footage.

Wisconsin Wetlands Association is proud to be sponsoring the national distribution of this beautiful exploration into wonder.

“That summer reshaped my understanding of wetlands,” filmmaker Ben Albert said. “I learned how they safeguard biodiversity, reduce floods, and clean our water. Yet with half already lost nationally, these vital ecosystems continue to disappear. My grandpa taught me that to protect something, we first have to fall in love with it. I hope this film inspires viewers to slow down, look closely, and rediscover the natural wonder around them – whether it’s a wetland, a park, or just beyond their own back door.”
