Wisconsin is blessed with a tremendous diversity of wetlands that vary around the state. Great Lakes coastal wetlands are distict from those of the Upper Mississippi River basin, and southern wetlands are quite distinct from northern wetlands. For the purposes of this project, WWA has divided the state into eight geographic regions based on physical and biological characteristics such as climate, geology, soils, water and vegetation. These regions are based on WDNR's Ecological Landscapes of Wisconsin, which we consolidated in consultation with DNR ecologists.
Our Wetland Gems site selection process included making sure that all wetland community types that are present in a given region are represented by the Gem sites chosen for that region. Click the map images below to explore Wetland Gems by region and download printable region maps.
