Wisconsin Wetlands Association Mourns the Passing of Hilda McVoy

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear friend and long-time board member Hilda McVoy. Hilda was a member of the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Wetlands Association (WWA) from 1997 to 2005, a position she shared with her husband, Kirk, for most of those years. Their passion for wetlands and their love for each other was evident to all those who knew them.

Hilda was smart, passionate and politically astute. She had a strong interest in wetland restoration, and her attention to detail and high standards were reflected in her frequent visits to the wetland restoration projects in which she was involved. Her excursions into the field occurred in all weather conditions from hot and humid to below zero and windy. Hilda single-handedly took charge of the wetland restoration activities at Capitol Springs State Park, where she could be found controlling invasive reed canary grass by hand. She was also beloved by the countless school children she would meet in the classroom and on tours in the field.

Hilda and Kirk were instrumental in making the Wisconsin Wetlands Association what it is today. Their tenure on the board occurred at a time when the organization had little or no staff, and they spent countless hours doing the things that are now accomplished by paid employees. The love and close bond that Kirk and Hilda maintained is evident by the fact that they are the only two people that have ever shared a seat on WWA’s board. At Kirk’s passing, and with Hilda’s assistance, WWA named its Defense Fund in his honor. The Kirk McVoy Wetland Defense Fund is used for legal actions, policy advocacy, and associated activities related to large-scale wetlands issues. At the McVoy family's request, WWA's Board of Directors will take up a proposal to update the name of this fund to the Kirk and Hilda McVoy Wetland Defense Fund.

We want to thank Hilda for her many years of service to the Wisconsin Wetlands Association. Our thoughts and prayers extend to her family, friends and colleagues.

The family has asked that donations be made to Wisconsin Wetlands Association in honor of Hilda’s love and passion for the wetland resources of Wisconsin.

The family is also setting up a website on which memories and photos of Hilda will be shared. To contribute to this website, send your memory to hilda [at] mcvoy.com. Include your photo(s) as attachment(s) to your email. The family asks that you send one story per email and give the story a name in the subject line of your email. Ultimately these memories will be collected at the website http://hilda.mcvoy.com.

About the Kirk McVoy Wetland Defense Fund

Help us raise funds for wetland defense!

Wisconsin has some of the most beautiful and extensive wetlands and waters in the nation, yet these wonderful resources continue to be threatened by increasing development. As the nation's first and oldest non-profit dedicated solely to wetlands protection, Wisconsin Wetlands Association has established the Kirk McVoy Wetland Defense Fund.

The Wetland Defense Fund is designed to defend our state's wetland heritage from bad policy, major development threats, and specific judicial, legislative, or legal activities that would have a lasting negative impact. The Wetland Defense Fund is goverened by the WWA Board of Directors and will be used for legal actions, policy advocacy and lobbying (to the extent allowed by the IRS) against proposed activities that will destroy or impact a significant amount of wetlands. WWA general operations and office costs will not be supported by this fund. Donations to the fund are separate from annual membership dues.

Your tax deductible contribution is needed to help build the Fund today!
