Wetland Summits
In 2011, Wisconsin Wetlands Association (WWA) convened Wetland Summits in Brown and Sheboygan Counties to facilitate discussions on county-wide wetland challenges and opportunities to improve local wetland education, restoration, and protection efforts. This was a pilot project based on input we had received on the need for more community-based opportunities to learn about wetlands and talk about wetland issues.
The events were fruitful, increasing participant’s knowledge about WWA’s resources that can help individuals and organizations communicate about wetland benefits, wetland programs and priorities, and ongoing local wetland protection, restoration, and education projects. Participants overwhelmingly said they would encourage colleagues to attend a Wetland Summit if one was offered in their community and also strongly recommended that more similar discussions be held in other locations.
In response, WWA developed How to Host a Wetland Summit, a document to help additional communities organize and fund a Wetland Summit event. This step-by-step guide will help wetland professionals and enthusiasts organize a summit event in their community. This document is currently being promoted through various networks. We are also working to identify possible sources of funding for Wetland Summits and plan to promote funding opportunities as a way to encourage the organizing of these events in additional communities.
