Greetings!
Despite
strong support from the Bush Administration, the U.S. House of
Representatives last month rejected a proposed amendment that would have
restored full funding to the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP). An earlier
House measure asserted a dramatic cut to the program.
We
need your help to ensure the Senate hears our concerns that decreasing
funding to the Wetlands Reserve Program is simply unacceptable to the
hunting, fishing and conservation community.
The
Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee will consider funding for
WRP in the next week. Constituents of Senator Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, as well as constituents of Senator Thad
Cochran of Mississippi and Senator Robert
Bennett of Utah
are being asked to call or write in support of a fully funded WRP program
in 2007.

Background on
the Wetlands Reserve Program
|
|

|
|
The Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) is a
federal voluntary program to restore and protect wetlands on private
property. WRP is by far the larget source of
funding for wetland restoration in Wisconsin.
It is an opportunity for landowners to receive financial incentives and
technical assistance to restore wetlands that have been drained for
agriculture. WRP has been an extremely important program for wetlands
conservation in Wisconsin,
accounting for tens of thousands acres of restored wetlands. Since the
majority of Wisconsin’s wetlands are on private lands, any cuts to WRP will significantly impact wetland and water quality
protection efforts in the state.

Our friends from Ducks Unlimited have
notified us that a move to get the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) funding
restored to the recommended level of 250,000 acres fell short in the
House of Representatives. The fight now moves to the Senate to save this
important wetlands conservation program. Wisconsin Senator Herb Kohl is
one of three critical votes.
Please use the link below to contact
Sen. Herb Kohl and let him know of your support for WRP. The link does
all the work for you; all that is required is about 3 minutes of your
time. It is imperative that we get calls, letters and faxes to the
Senator's office this week so that we can salvage WRP. Sen. Kohl plays a
key role in the Senate Appropriations process, so please contact him, and
spread the word to your conservation-minded friends. Thank you for your support
of wetlands conservation.
