CHRONICLING WISCONSIN WETLANDS: DISCOVERING INSPIRATION, REFUGE & RENEWAL
Workshop includes a presentation, nature journaling activity and book signing by author Laurie Lawlor
>> Milwaukee: May 11, 2006
>> Madison: May 25, 2006
Award-winning Laurie Lawlor, author of recently released memoir/natural history THIS TENDER PLACE THE STORY OF A WETLAND YEAR (University of Wisconsin Press), will share the process of creating her book about the plants, animals, and human inhabitants of a rare wetland in southeastern Wisconsin. Her workshop will offer aspiring writers hands-on experience using nature journals. The free workshop will help writers hone observation skills, express creativity, and celebrate questioning.
Lawlor was a guest on WPR's Larry Meiller show on the first day of spring, March 20. Click here to listen to her discuss wetlands and read an excerpt from her book.
This Tender Place is a celebration of nature, the elements, and humanity. From the wetland's genesis during the ice age to its survival in the twenty-first century, Lawlor chronicles the universal ties among people, wild places, and healthy wetlands. An engaging and deeply intimate record, This Tender Place is at its heart a story of refuge and renewal refracted through the lens of life within wetlands-among the most productive, yet most endangered, ecosystems in the world.
Lawlor is the author of more than 35 books for children, young adults, and adults. She currently teaches writing to undergraduate and graduate students at Columbia College in Chicago. For the past 20 years she has provided writing workshops and lectures throughout the Midwest.
